    • Iron is an essential element for the formation of hemoglobin of red blood cells & plays an important role in the transport of oxygen.

    • Iron deficiency is common predominantly in women of reproductive age irrespective of socioeconomic class.
    • During pregnancy iron & folic acid supplementation as medicines as advised by my Doctor is a must to take every day.
    • Iron is required for hemoglobin synthesis ; hence deficiency of iron leads to anemia in mother.
    • Iron supplementation during pregnancy is very important as iron deficiency can lead to low birth weight babies.
    • Food from plant origin like green leafy vegetables are rich sources of iron.
    • Pregnant woman should not take tea or coffee immediately after meal because , it decreases iron absorption.
    • Vitamin C increases iron absorption.
    • In order to increase iron absorption from food ; pregnant woman can take vitamin C rich food along with her meals.

Tips to increase iron in my body :

  • I must take iron and folic acid supplements everyday as advised by my doctor .
  • I will include food rich in vitamin C in my diet to increase iron absorption.
  • Iron rich food is lotus stem dry , karonda dry , amaranth , cow pea leaves , rice flakes , radish leaves table , shepu , mint , knol khol green , soya bean , colocasia leaves , moth beans pulse , cow pea pulse.
  • Vitamin C rich food is amla , drumstick leaves , guava country , knol khol green , giant chilies , coriander leaves , drumstick , radish leaves table , amaranth , bitter gourd , knol khol , radish leaves , orange , lime , colocasia leaves , strawberry ,fenugreek leaves ,sweet lime , spinach , mint.
  • Tamarind contains tannin which decreases iron absorption and hence tamarind should be avoided in pregnancy.
  • I will avoid coffee or tea immediately after meal as it decreases iron absorption.
